Konferencija: YOUNG PEOPLE AND POLITICAL
2006-12-14 09:50
Dear all, As members of the Standing group on Forms of Political Participation we are trying to put up together one or two panels for the ECPR General Conference to be celebrated in Pisa next september related to YOUNG PEOPLE AND POLITICAL PARTICIPATION / EDUCATION FOR CITIZENSHIP AND POLITICAL PARTICIPATION. We would like to invite all those of you interested to send us paper proposals by next FRIDAY 15th of DECEMBER. If you would like to be a discussant (instead of, or besides, presenting a paper), please do tell us as well. We would appreciate very much if you sent this email to other people that you think could be interested. Here are the topics and ideas that we would like to explore in the panel(s):
During the last decade there has been an increasing literature about the relationship between young people and politics. Against the well spread impression, supported by part of the academic literature, that young people are retreating from politics, some authors have suggested that what is taking place is a change in the meanings and the ways in which young people are participating in politics. Also, there have been an increasing number of initiatives both on the part of international organizations, of some governments and of the civil society trying to engage young people in different ways of political participation. We are interested in papers related with the different aspects of this debate and, more specifically we would like to receive proposals for papers
- Identifying general trends about the forms of political participation that young people are moving away from (Voting? All party-related?) and the ones that may be substituting them (Protest? Political consumerism? Volunteering?), if any. - Suggesting ways to disentangle life-cycle and cohort effects. Is there something new about the ways in which young people relate to politics nowadays? - Identifying new forms of political participation amongst young people (new ICTs
) - Linking possible new meanings of politics to new forms of political participation amongst young people - Identifying the profile of those young people who participate as well as the different profiles of those who participate in different forms of political participation - Identifying sources of political socialization (family, media, school, political parties, associations
) that facilitate more participative attitudes and behaviours amongst young people. - Analyzing the results of policy initiatives to promote political participation amongst young people - Analyzing the effects of education for citizenship and political participation (and between different approaches and contents in education for citizenship and different forms of political participation) Although not exclusively, we especially welcome papers with empirical material, whether quantitative or qualitative.
We are looking forward to hearing from you. Best, Gema Garcia-Albacete (Universidad Autonoma de Madrid) Irene Martin (Universidad Autonoma de Madrid)
