The principle idea of this EIRSS session is to consider how Russia, as a domain of study, is present in contemporary International Relations and what part it plays in its disciplinary discussions.
During the Cold War period this domain of study was part of the IR research agenda mainly in the sense of the traditional focus on foreign and security policy, and studies focusing on the region were also carried out under the rubrics of Kremlinology, Soviet Studies, and Communist Studies. Russian studies in IR have now greatly expanded and are being shaped by a variety of approaches reflecting the discipline’s traditions and recent trends in social theory and research methodology. Simultaneously the situation where IR studies are in the process of being established in Russian universities and research institutions invites a dialogue of different academic and cultural traditions.

The session programme is organized around the idea of dialogue, and Russian academics and practitioners of foreign policy will be invited as guest lecturers and experts for the individual courses. The specific course thematic deals with issues and problems relating to Russia’s cooperation with the West and participation in Western international and global institutions and movements. The Russian state and society are approached as multifaceted entities and processes of international integration are examined in their interplay of domestic and external factors. The courses have a disciplinary focus but also interdisciplinary studies relevant to the specific subject area are incorporated.

Lectures and workshop sessions on theory and methodology run through the programme and provide a common frame for reflections on Russia and IR Studies. The course programme includes a research seminar for the presentations of individual Ph.D. work and post-doctoral research.

The host institution, the M.V. Lomonosov Moscow State University (founded in 1755) provides a venue which with its impressive history represents the Russian academic traditions. The students will be also introduced to the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO University), which during the Cold War was the key institution in international relations and diplomatic expertise and also today continues to be one of the main centres for developing IR studies in Russia.
