"NATIONAL SECURITY" Goes Beyond Military Might
15th International Seminar on National Security
Galillee College / Israel, December 01 - 12, 2005
"National security has other dimensions. It is a broad description of the elements in our society that make it "secure" -- and that goes much further than "a common defence." It includes anything that adds to the strength of the nation.
But beyond the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard, without healthy industries providing jobs, the quality of life deteriorates to a point where hunger leads to the disintegration of society. It leads to strife on many different levels. No community, local or global, can sustain indefinitely whole populations of "haves" and "have nots."
National security goes to the very core of how we define who we are as a people, and a free society. It concerns how we view our world responsibilities. All social systems must define a set of values. Values are an integral part of a nation's infrastructure. Human rights and respect for the individual are at the core of our Bill of Rights and the aim of democracy around the world.
National Security is societal strength, encompassing the economy, the health of the industrial base, stable government and diplomacy, education, strong societal and moral codes, the rule of law, health care and environmental sustainability.
Understanding all these parts of a complex equation is crucial to understanding National Security." - Shelia R. Ronis
The "War Against Terror", is at the top of the agenda in several western countries, but in other parts of the world, this topic has been set aside, due to overwhelming internal issues. As the Israeli Government, advance forward with the withdraw from the occupied territories, our 15th International Seminar on National Security, will be tackling the social and economical aspects of National Security, implied on both the Israeli and the Palestinian people indirect connection with this course of action.
